Growth in business is frequently an important focus and for good reason. I see many business owners putting significant time and resources into growing their business. But is the person growing the business growing? This is my question to you.
The topic of personal development is frequently neglected whilst people pour themselves into growing their businesses. You want to see a change in your business right? Well, my simple advice to you is “Be the change you want to see”.
Growth in all formats whether it is progressive or exponential in business, can only truly be successful if the engine of people powering the charge for growth grow as well. This sounds simple right, but it is almost always overlooked. I am not talking about sending yourself and your staff off on training courses either. I am talking about becoming a better version of you so that you can help your staff be a better version of themselves. When was the last time you considered your personal growth as a human being? For some, the answer to this question will be never, or too long ago to think about. Quite possibly the most frequent excuse I've heard of all of them is, I don't have time! Do you have time to keep making the same mistakes in your business?
Research is pretty clear in this area. To prosper during changing times we need to be open to changing ourselves. Take COVID19 as the most current example. Do you see disruption or do you see an opportunity? If you see disruption you might be long overdue for exactly the personal growth I am talking about. If you see opportunity then maybe you might be at least on the right path. The age of automation is placing the skills of creativity, instinct, perception and social/emotional capacity high on the list of importance if you want to survive in the future that is coming. These skills are fast being lost through the blur of endless information feeds and cannot be replaced by machines. Food for thought isn't it if you want to get ahead of the pack before the next disruption.
There are many reasons why growth and change don’t happen successfully in business. It may surprise you to know that it is the very same reason why growth & change doesn’t happen successfully in individuals. This is how we’ve always done it and it works! This is just how I am and I can’t change! Is anything looking familiar? Guess what if you or your people are operating this way your system is broken and the future is looking grim.
I've spent many years educating and supporting people both personally and professionally, through change and growth periods in their life. Sometimes to grow our business we simply need to get out of our own way. Are you in your way? This is invariably not an easy question to face. But if you don’t face it now it will just keep coming up again and again until you do. There is a reason why research is telling us that our people are our greatest resources. Stagnant people produce stagnant results because ultimately they continuously do the same things over and over again. If you want better results you need to create better people, to move the business forward in the direction you want to go.
If you want to learn how to grow your organisation through your people, then maybe its time to grow your business through mindfulness. I love the saying “a fish rots at the head”. As harsh as it is to hear, it is most often true. Grow you, then grow your people and they will grow your business. Your business may need this more than you think, with statistics at an all-time low for employee satisfaction. The struggles of COVID19 will only further exacerbate this situation because people will stay in jobs they are unhappy with just for stability in unstable times. Are these the people you are expecting to grow your business on the other side of COVID19?
