Love - How Yoga can uncover what existed in you all along

Updated: Apr 29

For many, it seems like we endlessly search for the love of our life, whilst others find a beautiful and precious love early, that can sometimes last a lifetime. Is this luck, or by design?

Which type of person in this situation are you? Are you endlessly seeking love externally to you, when it existed within you all along or did you find the love of your life early on? or Is the love of your life you?

Through social and cultural conditioning we have long created perceived societal standards, in the giving and receiving of love. These are ingrained in us from a very young age. Some of these conditions cause us to withhold love as a punishment of perceived wrongdoing, or even say things like mummy will love you if you clean your room. They seem small and inconsequential at the time, but over years, they form deep conditioning around the expectations of receiving when we give, and love is not the only emotion that we treat this way. In acting this way, we set children up to become adults with expectations and conditions on love, which continue throughout life, in a never-ending cycle.

It might be hard to imagine, however, a good solid yoga practice can help you to understand love in ways you may not have thought about. Yoga to understand love, you say! how is that even possible? To understand this first we need to understand what Yoga is and is not, at its core. Yoga is not merely a form of exercise. It is the simplicity of living a good life and helping those around you do the same. This is an incredibly important distinction to make.

So with this in mind, we can then go on to understand how Yoga exists in every part of our life. Every act of kindness towards both yourself and others is an act of love. Yoga enables you to see the love in everything you do, from driving your children to school, to making dinner for your loved ones, and taking time for self-care. These are all acts of love and Yoga in the many different forms it takes on in your life.

Whatever you want in life, including love, if you give it away without condition, all that you desire will find its way to you. It is the natural flow of the universe and a simple philosophy of Yoga. The tide does not go in with the expectation of going out, just as with our breath, it simply happens in the natural flow of nature. A mother animal does not feed their infants with any expectation. They are simply working to ensure the survival of their species.

There are times in life when we have the opportunity to help others who cannot help us. This is an opportunity to express unconditional love through an act of service to another. Love for the sake of simply being kind is such a beautiful thing to offer another human being, in exchange for absolutely nothing.

Sometimes you plant the seed of love. Sometimes you get to water the seed, and sometimes you get to watch the seed flourish. However, most often, you do not get to see all stages of the act of unconditional love.

In life, if you decide to be kind, you will get kindness. But equally in life if you get angry, you will get anger from others. It all starts from within you. You will always reap what you sew.

From today instead of seeking love, try giving it freely, from where it exists within you because inside your heart is the love you've been waiting for. Plant the seed of unconditional love in others and watch as they grow from your love, and pass the very same kindness on to others. Don't worry if you don't get to see the fruits of your labours.

There are many yoga practices that support the growth of unconditional love, all of which are available to every one of us at any time in our lives.

The question we should all be asking is What world do we want to live in?

This is an intention. Then we need to take action to apply attention to our intention. Through the powers of observation, we can learn to understand the true power of Yoga to uncover that we are at the beginning of every cycle. It all starts with us.
