The powerful practice of redesigning your relationship with your breath

The relationship you have with your breath is incredibly important, considering it is the life force that runs through your entire body. However, where the real power exists is understanding how much more potential your breath contains beyond you simply leaving it to its own devices.

A human body's cell respiration is not much more than forty percent efficient. The remaining sixty percent of energy is lost from the body as heat.

Through physical body design, I have small lungs. Many years ago, I used to think I was unfit. No matter how much exercise I did, I still could not increase my lung capacity. I was baffled until I had a test and understood that I was just born with physically smaller lungs.

I needed to redesign my relationship with my breath. For a long time, I allowed my smaller lungs to hold me back in life. They are exactly the right they were meant to be for me. I have been designed this way exactly. There is nothing wrong, and nothing needs fixing.

As a beautiful friend of mine loves to say, to remind people, sometimes you simply need to change the way you look at it. In my case, I just needed to understand how I could be more efficient.

In my life, I swim, run, cycle, do yoga and pilates, amongst many other things, and my breath never holds me back because I am no longer a victim of thinking that I can not change my breathing capacity. I have changed my breath efficiency a lot over the years, and it shows in many ways in my life.

My breath now expands my life. Through meditation and solid breathing practices, I have increased and changed the way I now breathe completely. This expanded view has impacted my life in every possible way and can do the same in your life.

To help you to understand how you can put this concept into practice, I will share my experience of swimming, before and after, I expanded my personal yoga practice. My breathwork & meditation practices have proven to be particularly fruitful.

I have enjoyed swimming for many years, yet I lost interest in it for years. I used to swim two to three times a week as part of a triathlon training regime. Let’s just say that the swimming leg of a triathlon was not exactly my favourite activity. People used to say I was always smiling when I got out of the water in a competition. The reason for this was simple. I was happy because I had completed the swim leg and I did not drown.

These days after many years of breathwork and expanded yoga practices I love to swim. True story, I now enjoy every stroke in the water, and I honestly look forward to swimming. Once I am in the water, I literally feel like I don’t want to get out. That is quite a change of perspective, wouldn’t you say!

It is all about my breath and my state of mind. Swimming nowadays is literally a beautiful conscious act of surrender. You see, I realised that the water is not the enemy when you swim. It is in fact, your closest ally should you choose to connect to it that way.

Each day I get in the pool, I swim with lots of people, mostly fighting against the water. I swim 2km non-stop without getting breathless or feeling fatigued at all. I glide through the water effortlessly and mindfully supported by water. That is not bad for a forty-nine-year-old woman who once was not a friend of the water at all.

When you put it into context, we all took our first breath in water, and we are more water than anything else. When you consider the similarities rather than what makes us different to water, the ability to surrender becomes easier, along with the natural rhythm and flow of your breath.

So today, I say redesign your relationship with your breath, and the world can indeed become your oyster. Life's potential is infinite, outside of your mind, once you break free of your limiting beliefs.
