Understanding how you can be calm in any storm

When a storm rolls into your life, it is easy to get caught up in the flurry of it all. Feeling like the strong pull of the storm happens, with or without your desire to support it. If this is you, know that you are not alone, and it is more common than you might think.

Do you feel the pull of the storm in your life? Whether it be when someone cuts you off in traffic, each time you have the same argument with your partner or frustrations set in for a job that no longer excites you.

Daily life sometimes can feel like a thunderstorm, building from a pot of water on a constant boiling cycle. Many of us live on the edge of anger, fear, and tears. Eventually, it can build into a feeling like we’ve lost all control.

It might be hard to believe that you can be calm in the middle of any storm, on any day. It is all about knowing what you do and do not have control over in life. We frequently cannot control the external storm that rolls in. However, we can control how we respond. It is here, where your ability to be calm, right in the middle of the flurry of the storm lies.

I have both learned these skills personally, and as a mindfulness coach, I have the pleasure of sharing these skills with others. Finding your calm centre as the storms rages around you is much closer than you might think.

Through some relatively simple mindfulness practices, you can develop a set of tools and techniques that you can pull from your bag of tricks, at any time when you recognise the storm rolling in. Your capacity for this can be incredibly powerful to tap into.

When new skills are developed, new neurological pathways form in the brain. Then you allow new and improved habits to form, in response to dealing with difficult situations in life. The first piece of magic happens when you adjust your reaction to the incoming storm. Then the real magic happens when you see what changes in the person who brought the storm to you in the first place.

Part of the practice of being calm in the middle of any storm can be learned, through developing yoga practices in awareness and surrender in meditation and physical yoga practices.
